This easy chicken gravy recipe is a quick and flavorful addition to your meals, perfect for serving over mashed potatoes, roasted chicken, or biscuits. Made with simple ingredients like butter, flour, chicken stock, and a blend of seasonings, it creates a rich, creamy gravy in just 15 minutes.

  • Total Time: 15 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

Gravy Ingredients

  • 6 Tbsp unsalted butter, cut into 1-Tbsp pieces
  • 6 Tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 to 3 cups unsalted chicken stock
  • 1 Tbsp chicken base
  • 1/4 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp paprika
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 3 Tbsp heavy cream (optional)

Instructions

  1. Melt butter and cook flour: Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add the flour and cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture becomes lightly golden brown, about 3 minutes. This step creates a roux which will thicken the gravy.
  2. Add chicken stock and seasonings: While continuously whisking, slowly pour in the chicken stock to avoid lumps. Stir in the chicken base, onion powder, garlic powder, and paprika. Season with salt and black pepper according to your taste.
  3. Simmer the gravy: Bring the mixture to a light simmer, stirring constantly and scraping the bottom edges of the pan to prevent burning. Let it cook until thickened.
  4. Adjust consistency: If the gravy is too thick, thin it with up to 1/2 cup more chicken broth as desired. Remember the gravy will thicken slightly as it cools.
  5. Add heavy cream and serve: Stir in the heavy cream if you prefer a creamier texture. Serve the gravy warm over your favorite dishes.

Notes

  • Use unsalted butter and chicken stock to control the saltiness of your gravy.
  • For a gluten-free version, substitute all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend.
  • The chicken base adds a concentrated chicken flavor but can be omitted if unavailable; increase chicken stock accordingly.
  • Whisking constantly while adding stock prevents lumps and ensures a smooth gravy.
  • Make sure to scrape the bottom edges during simmering to prevent sticking and burning.
  • Heavy cream is optional but adds richness and a silky texture.
  • Gravy thickens as it cools, so adjust liquid accordingly before serving.
  • Leftover gravy can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated gently on the stovetop with a splash of stock or water.
