Ingredients
Chicken
- 1 pound frozen crispy chicken strips (or homemade chicken strips; see note 1)
- 2 tablespoons toasted sesame oil
Sauce
- 3-1/2 tablespoons minced garlic
- 1/4 cup + 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1/4 cup gochujang sauce
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1/2 cup light brown sugar (lightly packed)
- 1/4 cup soy sauce (regular, not lite)
Garnish (optional)
- 2 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds
- Thinly sliced green onions
- Cooked rice (for serving)
Instructions
- Cook Chicken: Prepare the frozen crispy chicken strips according to the package instructions, preferably by air frying them for about 11 to 12 minutes until crispy. Let them cool slightly, then cut into bite-sized pieces and place them in a large bowl.
- Prepare Sauce: While the chicken cooks, heat a medium pot over medium-high heat and add the toasted sesame oil. When the oil is shimmering, add the minced garlic and stir constantly, cooking for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Build Sauce: Add ketchup, gochujang sauce, honey, light brown sugar, and soy sauce to the pot. Stir continuously until the sugar is fully dissolved and the sauce is smooth and well combined.
- Adjust Flavors: Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning as needed. Increase the amount of gochujang for extra heat or add a small pinch of salt if necessary.
- Toss and Serve: Pour the desired amount of the prepared sauce over the cooked chicken pieces and gently toss to coat evenly. Serve immediately, optionally over cooked rice, and garnish with toasted sesame seeds and thinly sliced green onions.
Notes
- If making chicken from scratch, use your preferred recipe for crispy chicken strips before tossing with the sauce.
- Gochujang sauce adds spicy depth; adjust quantity based on your heat tolerance.
- Additional garnishes such as sesame seeds and green onions add flavor and texture but are optional.
- Serving over rice makes for a complete meal.
