Ingredients
Citrus Syrup
- 1½ cup granulated white sugar
- Rind of 1 lemon
- Rind of 1 blood orange
- 1½ cup water
Fresh Juices
- ¾ cup lemon juice (freshly squeezed, strained of pulp)
- ¾ cup blood orange juice (freshly squeezed, strained of pulp)
Final Drink
- 750 ml sparkling water (or more as needed, preferably Topo Chico)
- Ice, as needed
Instructions
- Make the Citrus Syrup: In a saucepan, combine the sugar, lemon rind, blood orange rind, and 1½ cups of water. Stir constantly and bring the mixture to a low boil over medium to medium-high heat. Continue stirring until all the sugar has completely dissolved. Once done, transfer the syrup to a clean container and allow it to cool completely before using.
- Prepare the Lemonade: In a large pitcher, combine the freshly squeezed and strained lemon juice, blood orange juice, and all the cooled citrus syrup. Add 4 cups of cold water and stir well to mix all the flavors together. Chill the mixture in the refrigerator until ready to serve.
- Serve: Fill glasses or jars with ice to the top. Pour the lemonade mixture up to three-quarters full and then top off each glass with sparkling water, such as Topo Chico, to add effervescence and a refreshing sparkle. Stir gently if needed and enjoy immediately.
Notes
- Adjust sweetness by varying the amount of sugar in the syrup according to your taste preference.
- Use freshly squeezed juices for the best flavor and vibrant color.
- Strain juices well to avoid pulp, but leaving some pulp is fine if preferred for texture.
- Sparking water can be swapped for any preferred brand or flavor, but plain sparkling water keeps the lemonade bright and refreshing.
- Chill the lemonade thoroughly before serving to enhance refreshment.
- For a stronger citrus flavor, add more lemon or blood orange zest to the syrup while boiling.
