Ingredients
Cheese Layer
- 1 cup ricotta cheese
- 3 tablespoons cream cheese
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon dried basil
- ½ teaspoon dried parsley
- ½ teaspoon dried oregano
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
Spaghetti
- ½ lb. spaghetti
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 2 eggs, whisked
- ½ cup parmesan cheese
Meat Sauce
- 1 lb. ground beef
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1 small yellow onion, diced
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon hot sauce (mild, not spicy)
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 24 oz. marinara sauce
Topping
- 1 ½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese
Instructions
- Prepare the Baking Dish: Select a deep 9 or 10-inch pie pan or a 2 to 2 ½ quart baking dish and lightly grease it to prevent sticking.
- Make the Cheese Mixture: In a medium bowl, combine ricotta, cream cheese, salt, dried basil, parsley, oregano, and pepper. Stir well and set aside for layering later.
- Preheat Oven and Boil Pasta: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil to cook the spaghetti.
- Cook Ground Beef and Onions: Season the ground beef with salt and pepper. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat, add ground beef and diced onions, and cook, breaking up the meat, for 7 to 10 minutes until browned and fully cooked. Drain any excess grease.
- Add Aromatics and Sauce: Reduce heat to medium, add minced garlic, hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and Italian seasoning to the beef mixture. Cook for about 2 minutes to release the flavors. Stir in marinara sauce, reduce heat to low, and let it simmer uncovered while the pasta cooks.
- Cook and Toss Spaghetti: Cook spaghetti in boiling water until al dente, then drain. Return pasta to the warm pot, add butter and parmesan cheese, and toss to coat. Quickly add whisked eggs and toss thoroughly to combine.
- Combine Spaghetti and Meat Sauce: Stir 1 ½ cups of the meat sauce into the spaghetti mixture. Remove from heat and transfer the mixture into the prepared baking dish, pressing it down firmly to form a packed layer.
- Layer Cheese and Sauce: Spread the reserved ricotta and cream cheese mixture evenly over the spaghetti layer. Top this with the remaining meat sauce, spreading it evenly. The dish will be quite full but should hold together well.
- Add Mozzarella and Bake: Sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese evenly over the top. Bake uncovered in the preheated oven for 30 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbling. For a browned top, optionally broil at 450°F for a few minutes, watching carefully to avoid burning.
- Rest and Serve: Remove the pie from the oven and allow it to sit for 10 to 15 minutes to set before slicing and serving. Enjoy your comforting spaghetti pie!
Notes
- Use a deep pie pan or baking dish to accommodate the layers and prevent overflow during baking.
- Draining grease from the cooked ground beef helps reduce excess fat in the dish and improves flavor.
- The hot sauce adds depth without making the dish spicy; adjust according to preference.
- Letting the pie rest after baking ensures it firms up properly for clean slices.
- Broiling to brown the cheese is optional and should be done carefully as it can burn quickly.
