These Smoked Gouda Cheesy Mashed Potatoes are a creamy and flavorful twist on the classic side dish. Yukon Gold potatoes are boiled until tender, then mashed and combined with rich smoked Gouda cheese, butter, sour cream, and warm heavy cream. This recipe yields smooth, velvety mashed potatoes with a smoky, cheesy depth perfect for any meal.

  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

Potatoes

  • 2 ½ pounds Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and quartered
  • Salt, to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Dairy

  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, sliced
  • 2 cups (about 4 ½ ounces) smoked Gouda cheese, finely grated
  • ½ cup sour cream, at room temperature
  • ½ to ¾ cup heavy cream or half and half, warm

Instructions

  1. Prepare the potatoes: Place the peeled and quartered Yukon Gold potatoes into a large pot and cover them with cold water. Add a generous pinch of salt to the water to season.
  2. Cook the potatoes: Bring the pot to medium-high heat and allow the water to come to a boil. Let the potatoes cook for about 15 minutes until they are very tender and easily pierced with a fork. Drain the potatoes thoroughly in a colander.
  3. Rice the potatoes: Using a potato ricer, press the drained potatoes back into the pot while off the heat to create a smooth, fluffy texture without lumps.
  4. Add butter: Stir in the sliced butter into the hot potatoes, mixing until the butter has completely melted and is fully incorporated.
  5. Add cheese and cream: Add the finely grated smoked Gouda, room temperature sour cream, and ⅓ cup of the warm heavy cream to the potatoes. Season with a pinch of salt and freshly ground black pepper. Stir everything together until smooth and creamy. Add additional heavy cream as needed to reach your desired consistency.
  6. Adjust seasoning: Taste the mashed potatoes and adjust the salt and pepper as needed to enhance the flavors.
  7. Serve: Serve the smoked Gouda cheesy mashed potatoes immediately while warm for the best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • Use warm heavy cream to prevent cooling down the mashed potatoes and to help achieve a smooth consistency.
  • Yukon Gold potatoes are preferred for their creamy texture when mashed.
  • For a lighter option, you can substitute heavy cream with half and half.
  • This recipe serves well as a side dish for roasted meats, grilled vegetables, or holiday meals.
