A cozy and comforting Slow Cooker Apple Cider recipe that blends a variety of apples with warming spices and a touch of sweetness. This easy-to-make homemade cider simmers slowly to develop deep flavors, perfect for chilly days and festive gatherings.

  • Total Time: 5 hours 15 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients

Fruits

  • 7 to 8 medium gala apples (or Fuji, Honeycrisp, Red Delicious), quartered, cored but not peeled
  • 2 medium Granny Smith apples, quartered, cored but not peeled
  • 1 medium navel orange, sliced

Spices and Sweeteners

  • 3 sticks cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon whole cloves
  • ½ cup light brown sugar (plus more if needed)

Liquids

  • 9 to 10 cups water (or as needed to submerge the fruit)

Optional Garnish

  • Fresh apple slices
  • Fresh orange slices
  • Fresh cranberries
  • Whole spices for decoration

Instructions

  1. Prepare the fruit: Core the apples and cut them into quarters without peeling. Slice the navel orange into rounds. These will form the base for your cider.
  2. Add ingredients to the slow cooker: Place the quartered apples, orange slices, cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, and light brown sugar into a 7 or 8 quart slow cooker. Pour in enough water (9 to 10 cups) to submerge all the fruit. Stir gently to combine.
  3. First cooking phase: Set the slow cooker on HIGH and cook for 4 hours. This allows the fruit and spices to release their flavors and soften.
  4. Mash the cooked apples: Remove the softened apples and mash them thoroughly using a fork or masher, returning the mashed apples along with any juices back to the slow cooker. Add additional brown sugar to taste if desired.
  5. Second cooking phase: Continue cooking the mixture on HIGH for another hour to deepen the flavor and help meld the ingredients.
  6. Strain the cider: Pour the mixture through a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a large pot to remove solids. You can return the strained cider to the slow cooker set to WARM to keep it hot or refrigerate to serve cold.
  7. Garnish and serve: Optionally, garnish with fresh apple slices, orange slices, fresh cranberries, and whole spices for an attractive presentation. Enjoy your homemade slow cooker apple cider!

Notes

  • You can adjust the sweetness by adding more or less brown sugar according to taste.
  • Keep the peels on apples to add more depth of flavor and natural pectin to the cider.
  • The cider can be served warm or chilled depending on your preference.
  • Use a large enough slow cooker (7-8 quart) to accommodate all ingredients comfortably.
  • Make sure to strain well to remove all solids for a smooth cider.
  • The optional garnish adds visual appeal but is not necessary for flavor.
  • If you want a spicier cider, you can increase the cinnamon sticks or cloves slightly.
