This vibrant and flavorful Sesame Dressing combines toasted sesame oil, fresh ginger, garlic, and lime juice for a tangy, slightly spicy, and umami-rich condiment. Perfect for salads, grain bowls, steamed vegetables, or as a dipping sauce, this versatile dressing can be whipped up in just 10 minutes with minimal ingredients, and its flavors deepen beautifully after resting.

  • Total Time: 10 minutes
  • Yield: 1 serving (about ¼ cup dressing)

Ingredients

Sesame Seeds

  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds (optional, for texture and flavor)

Dressing

  • ¼ cup toasted sesame oil
  • 2 tablespoons reduced-sodium tamari or soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons lime juice
  • 2 to 3 teaspoons finely grated fresh ginger
  • 1 clove garlic, pressed or minced
  • ½ teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • Pinch of red pepper flakes (optional, for spice)

Instructions

  1. Toast Sesame Seeds: If using sesame seeds, place them in a small skillet over medium-low heat. Stir frequently for about 2 to 3 minutes until they turn golden and aromatic, then remove from heat to cool.
  2. Combine Ingredients: In a liquid measuring cup or small bowl, mix together toasted sesame oil, tamari, lime juice, 2 teaspoons of grated fresh ginger, pressed garlic, Dijon mustard, the optional red pepper flakes, and the toasted sesame seeds if using.
  3. Whisk and Adjust: Whisk the mixture thoroughly until well blended. Taste and add a tiny pinch of salt if desired. For a stronger ginger kick, whisk in the additional teaspoon of grated ginger.
  4. Rest and Store: The dressing can be served immediately, but allowing it to rest for about 20 minutes improves the flavor meld. Store in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to one week.

Notes

  • Toasted sesame seeds add a lovely crunch and deeper flavor, but can be omitted if unavailable.
  • Use reduced-sodium tamari or soy sauce to control saltiness.
  • Customize the heat level by adjusting or omitting the red pepper flakes.
  • Flavors develop best after resting, so make ahead when possible.
  • Store refrigerated and consume within a week for freshness.
