Ingredients
Meat Mixture
- 1 pound ground beef
- ½ cup finely chopped onion
- 1 ½ cups pizza sauce
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Assembly
- 4 hamburger buns or English muffins, split
- 1-2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- Mini pepperoni slices (optional)
- Butter or olive oil, for toasting (optional)
- Fresh basil, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or foil for easy cleanup.
- Cook Meat Mixture: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef with the finely chopped onion, breaking the meat up as it cooks, until browned and no longer pink. Drain any excess grease carefully.
- Simmer Sauce: Add the pizza sauce, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, salt, and pepper to the skillet. Stir well and let the mixture simmer for a few minutes until it is warm and slightly thickened.
- Toast Buns: Place the split hamburger buns or English muffins on the prepared baking sheet cut side up. For a crispier base, brush the cut sides with melted butter or olive oil and toast in the oven for 2-3 minutes before adding toppings.
- Assemble Burgers: Spoon the meat and sauce mixture evenly over each bun half. Generously sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese on top. Add mini pepperoni slices if desired.
- Bake Burgers: Bake the assembled open faced burgers for 5 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly. For extra browning, you can broil for an additional 1 minute, keeping a close eye to avoid burning.
- Garnish and Serve: Remove from the oven and top with fresh basil leaves if desired. Serve hot and enjoy your open faced pizza burgers immediately.
Notes
- You can customize toppings by adding mushrooms, bell peppers, or olives before baking.
- If you prefer a sturdier bun, English muffins hold up well to the saucy topping.
- For a lower fat version, use lean ground beef or ground turkey.
- Mini pepperoni is optional but adds an extra pizza flavor.
- Keep an eye when broiling as cheese can burn quickly.
