Ingredients
Dough Ingredients
- 1 stick butter (1/2 cup)
- 1 cup milk
- 3/4 cup all purpose flour
- 4 eggs
- 1/2-1 tablespoon sugar (optional for the dough)
Toppings and Serving
- Sugar, for sprinkling on top
- Honey (optional, for serving)
- Whipped cream (optional, for serving)
- Fresh fruit and/or berries (optional, for serving)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven and Prepare Muffin Pan: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a regular size muffin pan thoroughly with oil, making sure to coat the inside of each cup and the rims.
- Melt Butter and Heat Milk: In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Once melted, add the milk and bring the mixture to a low boil, stirring occasionally to prevent burning.
- Add Flour and Form Dough: Remove the saucepan from heat momentarily and add all the flour at once. Return the pan to low heat and stir vigorously with a wooden spoon. Continue stirring until the dough pulls away from the sides and forms a smooth ball that holds together.
- Cool Dough: Let the dough cool for about 5 minutes. This step is important to prevent the eggs from cooking when added.
- Incorporate Eggs: Add the eggs one at a time, beating thoroughly with a wooden spoon after each addition. The dough may look lumpy or separated initially but will become smooth and glossy as you combine all eggs.
- Fill Muffin Cups and Sprinkle Sugar: Divide the dough evenly into the prepared muffin cups. Sprinkle each puff generously with sugar to create a sweet crust during baking.
- Bake Until Golden: Bake in the preheated oven for about 30 minutes, or until the puffs have risen and turned a deep golden brown.
- Serve: Remove the puffs from the oven and serve warm. Drizzle with honey if desired, or add whipped cream, fresh fruit, or berries for extra flavor.
Notes
- Optional sugar in the dough enhances sweetness but is not necessary if you prefer a less sweet puff.
- Use a wooden spoon for stirring and beating to prevent damaging the pan and help combine the dough thoroughly.
- Cool the dough slightly before adding eggs to avoid scrambling them.
- Ensure puffs are golden brown before removing from oven to achieve that perfect fluffy texture.
- These puffs are best served fresh but can be reheated gently in the oven.
