Ingredients
Prime Rib Roast
- 4-5 pound Prime Rib Roast
Seasoning Mix
- 1/4 teaspoon dried parsley flakes
- 1/4 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 1/4 teaspoon dried basil
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon salt
Additional Seasonings
- 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce
- Garlic powder, to taste
- Onion salt, to taste
Au Jus
- 1 beef bouillon cube
- 1 cup water
- Au Jus Packet (optional, for extra au jus)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C) to prepare for searing the prime rib roast.
- Bring Meat to Room Temperature: Remove the prime rib from the refrigerator and allow it to come to room temperature, which helps ensure even cooking.
- Mix Seasonings: In a small bowl, combine the dried parsley flakes, dried basil, black pepper, Italian seasoning, and salt. Set this seasoning mix aside.
- Sear the Roast: Place the prime rib roast fat side up on a rack in an ungreased roasting pan. Bake at 450°F for 15 minutes to sear and lock in juices.
- Lower Oven Temperature: Reduce the oven temperature to 250°F (121°C) to continue slow roasting.
- Apply Worcestershire and Additional Seasonings: Take the roast out of the oven and rub it all over with Worcestershire sauce. Sprinkle a generous amount of onion salt and garlic powder evenly, rubbing it into the meat thoroughly.
- Season with Herb Mix: Sprinkle the prepared herb seasoning mix over the roast, rubbing it into all sides to ensure robust flavor.
- Slow Roast: Return the roast to the oven and cook for approximately 15 minutes per pound, or until a digital thermometer inserted into the thickest part reads 115-120°F (46-49°C) for medium rare.
- Prepare Au Jus: Remove the roast from the pan. Skim excess fat from the pan drippings. Dissolve the beef bouillon cube in 1 cup of water and add it to the drippings to make a flavorful au jus sauce.
- Make Additional Au Jus (Optional): If desired, prepare the au jus packet according to package instructions for extra sauce.
- Serve with Au Jus: To ensure each slice of prime rib is served at preferred temperature and juiciness, briefly dip slices into hot au jus warmed in a skillet as you carve.
Notes
- Bringing the roast to room temperature before cooking promotes even roasting.
- Use a digital meat thermometer for accurate internal temperature reading.
- Cooking times may vary slightly based on oven calibration and roast size.
- Rest the roast loosely covered with foil for 15-20 minutes before carving to allow juices to redistribute.
- Au jus enhances moisture and adds depth of flavor to the sliced prime rib.
- Optional au jus packet can be used for convenience and extra sauce quantity.
