Ingredients
Salmon
- 2 salmon fillets (~6 oz / 170 g each)
- 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
- Pinch of salt
- Pinch of black pepper
Honey Garlic Sauce
- 2 large garlic cloves, finely chopped
- 3 tablespoons soy sauce (low-sodium preferred)
- 3 tablespoons honey
- 1 tablespoon white vinegar
- 1 tablespoon water
- ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the sauce: In a small bowl, combine honey, soy sauce, white vinegar, finely chopped garlic, water, and red pepper flakes if using. Whisk everything together until well mixed.
- Season and sear the salmon: Season the salmon fillets lightly with salt and black pepper. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add the olive oil. When hot, place the salmon fillets skin-side down in the skillet and gently press down with tongs or a spatula to prevent curling.
- Cook first side: Let the salmon cook until it’s about halfway done on the sides, approximately 4 to 5 minutes, then carefully flip the fillets over using a spatula to cook the other side for 2 minutes.
- Add sauce and baste: Flip the fillets back to skin-side down, reduce the heat to low, and carefully pour the honey garlic sauce over the salmon. Be cautious as the sauce may bubble and spit. Baste the salmon continuously with the sauce for about 2 minutes.
- Remove salmon: Transfer the cooked salmon fillets to a plate once they are cooked through and evenly coated with the sauce.
- Reduce the sauce: Increase the heat slightly and cook the remaining sauce in the skillet for 2 to 4 minutes until it thickens and reduces slightly. Remove the sauce to a small bowl or ramekin.
- Serve: Drizzle the thickened sauce over the salmon and serve alongside your choice of sides, such as jasmine rice and avocado salad, for a complete meal.
Notes
- You can substitute olive oil with other cooking oils like avocado or vegetable oil if desired.
- To keep the dish gluten-free, use tamari or a gluten-free soy sauce.
- Adjust red pepper flakes to taste for spiciness or omit if you prefer a milder flavor.
- Make sure not to overcook the salmon; it should be moist and flaky.
- Leftover sauce can be refrigerated and used as a glaze or dressing for other dishes.
