Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
- ½ onion, chopped
- ½ green bell pepper, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- ½ cup ketchup
- 1 cup tomato sauce (or tomato passata)
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- ¼ teaspoon salt (or to taste)
- ½ teaspoon pepper (or to taste)
Instructions
- Brown the beef: Add the butter to a large skillet and melt it over medium-high heat. Once melted, add the ground beef and cook it thoroughly, stirring often and breaking it apart until fully browned.
- Sauté vegetables: To the same skillet, add the chopped onion and green bell pepper. Cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onion is soft and translucent. Then add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
- Simmer the mixture: Stir in ketchup, tomato sauce, brown sugar, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to a simmer. Cook uncovered for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally until the sauce thickens and develops a glossy texture.
- Serve: Spoon the hot sloppy joe mixture over halved buns and serve immediately for a delicious, hearty meal.
Notes
- For added spice, include a dash of hot sauce or red pepper flakes.
- Can be made ahead and reheated gently on the stovetop.
- Serve with pickles or coleslaw for extra crunch and flavor.
- Use lean ground beef for a lower-fat option.
