Ingredients
For the Date Caramel
- 2 cups medjool dates
- 3 Tbsp hot water
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/4 tsp sea salt
For the Apples
- 4 medium-large apples (honeycrisp recommended)
- Toppings of choice (such as chopped nuts, shredded coconut, cinnamon, chia seeds, or mini chocolate chips)
Instructions
- Soak Dates: Place the medjool dates in a bowl and cover them with hot water. Let them soak for 10 minutes to soften, which makes blending easier and yields a smoother caramel.
- Prepare Date Caramel: Drain the dates, remove any pits, and transfer the pitted dates to a high-powered food processor or blender. Add 3 tablespoons of hot water, vanilla extract, and sea salt. Pulse and blend until the mixture forms a thick, smooth paste. Scrape down the sides as needed to ensure even blending. If the caramel is too thick, add a little more water to reach your desired consistency.
- Slice Apples: Core the apples and slice them into rounds or wedges about 1/2-inch thick. Remove seeds and discard.
- Assemble: Spread or smear the prepared date caramel onto each apple slice individually, or serve the date caramel on the side as a dipping sauce. Sprinkle with your choice of toppings to add texture and flavor.
- Serve: Enjoy the caramel apple slices immediately to prevent the apples from browning and to appreciate the fresh, crisp texture alongside the rich date caramel.
Notes
- Choose sweet and firm apples like Honeycrisp, Fuji, or Gala for best results.
- Optional toppings include chopped walnuts or pecans, shredded coconut, cinnamon powder, chia seeds, or mini dark chocolate chips to enhance flavor and add crunch.
- This caramel is naturally sweetened with dates, making it a healthier alternative to traditional caramel sauces.
- To prevent apples from browning if preparing in advance, you can lightly coat them with lemon juice before adding the caramel.
- Store leftover date caramel in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.
