Ingredients
Sliders
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
- 1 package (12-count) Hawaiian sweet dinner rolls
- 1 pound deli roast beef
- 12 slices provolone cheese, divided
- 1 1/2 cups crispy fried onions (optional)
Butter Topping
- 8 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 packet au jus gravy mix
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
- 3/4 teaspoon dried minced garlic
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
Instructions
- Prepare: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Spread 2 tablespoons of softened butter evenly all over a 9×13-inch baking pan, then line the pan with parchment paper for easy cleanup.
- Cut Rolls: Using a serrated bread knife, carefully slice the entire block of Hawaiian rolls horizontally into two halves, keeping all the individual rolls attached. Place the bottom half of the rolls into the prepared pan.
- Assemble: Layer the bottom half of the rolls with 6 slices of provolone cheese, then spread the deli roast beef over the cheese, add the optional crispy fried onions if using, and top with the remaining 6 slices of cheese. Finally, place the top half of the rolls over the layered fillings.
- Brush on Butter: In a small microwave-safe bowl, melt 8 tablespoons of butter. Add 1 tablespoon of au jus gravy mix, Worcestershire sauce, sesame seeds, dried minced garlic, and onion powder to the melted butter. Whisk the mixture until well combined. Spread about three-quarters of this butter mixture evenly over the tops and sides of the assembled rolls. Refrigerate any leftover butter mixture for later use on steak or bread.
- Bake: Bake the sliders uncovered in the preheated oven until the cheese is melted and gooey and the tops of the rolls are golden brown, about 15 to 20 minutes.
- Prepare Au Jus: While the sliders bake, prepare the au jus sauce. In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the remaining au jus gravy mix packet with cold water according to the package instructions. Whisk the mixture and bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer until slightly thickened.
- Serve: Remove the baked sliders from the oven and cut them into individual portions along the roll divisions using a very sharp knife. Serve warm with the prepared au jus sauce for dipping.
Notes
- Using Hawaiian sweet rolls gives a nice balance of sweetness to the savory beef and cheese.
- The crispy fried onions are optional but add a great crunch and flavor contrast.
- Leftover butter mixture can be saved and used to enhance steaks or garlic bread.
- Make sure to keep the rolls attached while slicing to hold the sliders together during assembly and baking.
- Use a serrated knife for cleaner slicing without squashing the rolls.
