Ingredients
Blueberry Syrup
- 2/3 cup sugar (superfine is best)
- 2/3 cup water
- 1-1/2 cups fresh blueberries
- 1 teaspoon lemon zest
Lemonade
- 4 to 5 large lemons (to yield 1 cup lemon juice)
- 2 cups ice cubes
- 3 cups sparkling water or club soda (sparkling lemon lime water recommended)
Instructions
- Add Blueberries, Sugar, and Water: In a medium pot, combine the sugar, water, fresh blueberries, and 1 teaspoon of lemon zest to start making the blueberry syrup.
- Boil: Place the pot over medium heat and bring the mixture to a boil. Then reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes or until the sugar dissolves completely and the blueberries begin to burst, releasing their flavor.
- Cool: Remove the pot from heat and strain the syrup through a fine sieve to remove solids. Allow the blueberry syrup to cool completely before proceeding.
- Juice Lemons: While the syrup cools, juice 4 to 5 large lemons until you have about 1 cup of fresh lemon juice.
- Combine: In a large pitcher, mix together the cooled blueberry syrup, lemon juice, and ice cubes. Stir well to combine all ingredients.
- Serve: Just before serving, stir in 3 cups of sparkling water or club soda to add effervescence. Serve the lemonade immediately to enjoy the freshest fizz.
Notes
- Use superfine sugar for faster dissolving in the syrup.
- Do not add sparkling water if you plan to store leftovers to preserve carbonation.
- Adjust sweetness by altering the amount of sugar in the syrup to taste.
- Fresh blueberries are best, but frozen can be used if fresh are out of season.
- For a stronger lemon flavor, add extra lemon zest when making the syrup or more lemon juice.
