These Easy BBQ Tofu Sandwiches are a quick and delicious plant-based meal perfect for a weeknight dinner or casual lunch. Featuring crispy, pan-fried tofu tossed in tangy BBQ sauce and served on buns with optional coleslaw, this recipe is simple, flavorful, and sure to satisfy both vegetarians and meat-eaters alike.

  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

Tofu Marinade and Cooking

  • 1 (16 oz) block super firm tofu, or extra firm
  • 1 tablespoon oil, any kind you prefer
  • 2 teaspoons soy sauce
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons corn starch
  • 1/4 teaspoon granulated garlic
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • Pinch of salt

Additional Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup your favorite BBQ sauce, or more if desired
  • 4 hamburger buns, gluten free or regular
  • Cooking spray
  • Coleslaw or veggies for topping, if desired

Instructions

  1. Press and prepare tofu: Remove tofu from the package and press out any excess water using a tofu press or by wrapping it in paper towels and placing a heavy object on top. Then cut the block into small, bite-sized pieces or tear them by hand into small chunks for better texture.
  2. Make marinade and coat tofu: In a medium bowl, whisk together oil, soy sauce, paprika, granulated garlic, corn starch, and a pinch of salt until the corn starch is fully dissolved. Add the tofu pieces to the bowl and stir gently until every piece is thoroughly coated in the marinade mixture.
  3. Pan-fry the tofu: Heat a large skillet over medium heat and lightly spray it with cooking spray to prevent sticking. Arrange the tofu pieces in a single layer and cook without stirring too much for about 10-12 minutes, flipping occasionally. This allows the tofu to develop a nice golden-brown and crispy exterior.
  4. Coat with BBQ sauce and assemble sandwiches: Once tofu is crispy and cooked, turn off the heat and stir in the BBQ sauce until tofu pieces are well coated. Serve immediately on hamburger buns with your choice of coleslaw or fresh veggies for a complete sandwich.

Notes

  • Pressing tofu well is key to getting crispy texture.
  • You can adjust the BBQ sauce amount to taste or substitute with your favorite brand.
  • To make it gluten-free, be sure to use gluten-free soy sauce and buns.
  • Coleslaw or fresh crunchy veggies add great texture and balance the smoky BBQ flavor.
  • Leftover BBQ tofu can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
