Ingredients
Bouillon Mixture
- 1 beef bouillon cube
- 1¾ cups hot water
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp ground black pepper
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp Italian seasoning
Main Ingredients
- 2 pounds top sirloin steak, cut into very thin strips
- 1 medium red bell pepper, sliced thin (about 1 cup)
- 1 medium green bell pepper, sliced thin (about 1 cup)
- 1 medium white onion, sliced thin (about ½ cup)
Serving
- 6 hoagie buns, sliced in half lengthways
- 3 tbsp butter
- 6 slices provolone cheese, cut in strips
Instructions
- Prepare Beef Broth: In a large measuring cup, dissolve the beef bouillon cube in the hot water. Stir in Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and Italian seasoning to create the flavorful broth.
- Combine Ingredients in Crockpot: Place the thinly sliced sirloin steak, red and green bell peppers, and white onion into the crockpot.
- Add Broth and Mix: Pour the prepared beef broth mixture over the meat and vegetables in the crockpot. Stir gently to combine all ingredients evenly.
- Cook Slowly: Cover and cook on low heat for 6 to 8 hours or on high heat for 3 to 4 hours until the meat is fully cooked and tender.
- Toast Hoagie Buns: Once the meat is cooked, preheat your oven to 400°F (204°C). Spread butter on the cut sides of the hoagie buns and place them on a baking sheet with the cuts facing up. Bake for about 5 minutes or until golden and toasted around the edges.
- Assemble and Melt Cheese: Remove buns from the oven and spoon the beef and vegetable mixture onto each bun. Top with sliced provolone cheese. Return the assembled sandwiches to the oven for approximately 3 minutes, or until the cheese melts. Serve immediately.
Notes
- For easier slicing of the steak, partially freeze the meat before cutting into thin strips.
- Adjust cooking time based on your crockpot; some may cook faster or slower.
- Substitute provolone with other melting cheeses like mozzarella or American cheese if preferred.
- Add sliced mushrooms for extra flavor and texture.
- Butter the buns generously to get a nice golden toast in the oven.
- Leftover beef mixture can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
