Ingredients
Homemade Caramel Sauce
- ½ cup white sugar
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
- ¼ cup heavy cream
- ¼ teaspoon salt
Cream Cheese Caramel Dip
- 4 ounces cream cheese, softened to room temperature (1/2 cup)
- 2 tablespoons white sugar
- 2 tablespoons caramel sauce (from homemade caramel above)
- 1 cup cottage cheese
- 1 tablespoon heavy cream
To Serve
- Apples (preferably green apples)
- Pretzels (optional)
- Graham crackers (optional)
- Flaky salt (optional, for topping)
Instructions
- Prepare Homemade Caramel: Heat ½ cup white sugar in a medium-sized saucepan over medium-low heat. Stir only occasionally as the sugar slowly melts and turns a light brown color. Once fully melted, immediately remove from heat and whisk in 3 tablespoons unsalted butter until melted and combined. Then whisk in ¼ cup heavy cream and ¼ teaspoon salt until smooth. Pour the caramel into a heatproof bowl to cool.
- Blend Cottage Cheese Mixture: Place 1 cup cottage cheese and 1 tablespoon heavy cream in a blender and blend until smooth and creamy. Set aside.
- Prepare Cream Cheese Base: In a small bowl, beat 4 ounces softened cream cheese and 2 tablespoons white sugar with a hand mixer until light and fluffy. Add 2 tablespoons of the cooled caramel sauce and mix in thoroughly.
- Combine Mixtures: Fold the blended cottage cheese mixture into the cream cheese and caramel base until everything is well incorporated and smooth.
- Assemble the Dip: Transfer the combined mixture to a serving bowl and smooth the top. Pour additional caramel sauce over the dip and spread evenly with the back of a spoon. Use a straw or chopstick to swirl the caramel through the cream cheese mixture for a marbled effect.
- Chill and Serve: Refrigerate the dip until chilled. Before serving, optionally sprinkle with flaky salt. Serve with sliced green apples, pretzels, and/or graham crackers for dipping.
Notes
- For best texture, ensure cream cheese is at room temperature before mixing.
- Be patient when melting sugar to avoid burning the caramel.
- This dip can be made a few hours ahead and refrigerated to meld flavors.
- Adjust the amount of caramel sauce based on desired sweetness.
- For a richer dip, use full-fat cream cheese and cottage cheese.
