This homemade Caramel Macchiato recipe replicates the beloved Starbucks classic with rich espresso, creamy frothed milk, sweet vanilla syrup, and luscious caramel sauce. Perfect for coffee lovers wanting to indulge in a café-quality drink at home in just five minutes.

  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: 1 serving

Ingredients

Vanilla Syrup

  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup water
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Caramel Sauce

  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup whipping cream
  • 2 tablespoons salted butter
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Drink

  • 1 tablespoon vanilla syrup (store-bought or homemade)
  • ¾ cup whole milk
  • 2 ounces espresso

Instructions

  1. Make Vanilla Syrup: Combine granulated sugar and water in a small pot over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil and continue boiling for 8-10 minutes until the mixture thickens slightly. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Set aside to cool.
  2. Make Caramel Sauce: In another small pot, combine brown sugar, whipping cream, salted butter, salt, and vanilla extract. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce heat and simmer for 5-7 minutes until it thickens slightly. Remove from heat and allow to cool. Transfer to a squeeze bottle for easy drizzling.
  3. Add Syrup to Mug: Pour 1 tablespoon of the vanilla syrup into your serving mug.
  4. Froth Milk: Pour the whole milk into a container and froth using a milk frother, espresso machine wand, or whisk until light and foamy.
  5. Add Milk and Espresso: Pour the frothed milk into the mug over the vanilla syrup, then slowly pour the espresso on top to create the characteristic ‘marked’ effect.
  6. Drizzle Caramel: Drizzle caramel sauce on top of the drink in two circles around the edge of the mug and finish with a crosshatch pattern across the top, mimicking the Starbucks style.

Notes

  • Whole milk creates the creamiest froth; however, feel free to use your preferred milk alternative.
  • Espresso can be brewed using an espresso machine or a strong coffee concentrate from another method.
  • Store any leftover vanilla syrup and caramel sauce in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
