Ingredients
Vanilla Syrup
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- ½ cup water
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
Caramel Sauce
- ½ cup brown sugar
- ¼ cup whipping cream
- 2 tablespoons salted butter
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
Drink
- 1 tablespoon vanilla syrup (store-bought or homemade)
- ¾ cup whole milk
- 2 ounces espresso
Instructions
- Make Vanilla Syrup: Combine granulated sugar and water in a small pot over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil and continue boiling for 8-10 minutes until the mixture thickens slightly. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Set aside to cool.
- Make Caramel Sauce: In another small pot, combine brown sugar, whipping cream, salted butter, salt, and vanilla extract. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce heat and simmer for 5-7 minutes until it thickens slightly. Remove from heat and allow to cool. Transfer to a squeeze bottle for easy drizzling.
- Add Syrup to Mug: Pour 1 tablespoon of the vanilla syrup into your serving mug.
- Froth Milk: Pour the whole milk into a container and froth using a milk frother, espresso machine wand, or whisk until light and foamy.
- Add Milk and Espresso: Pour the frothed milk into the mug over the vanilla syrup, then slowly pour the espresso on top to create the characteristic ‘marked’ effect.
- Drizzle Caramel: Drizzle caramel sauce on top of the drink in two circles around the edge of the mug and finish with a crosshatch pattern across the top, mimicking the Starbucks style.
Notes
- Whole milk creates the creamiest froth; however, feel free to use your preferred milk alternative.
- Espresso can be brewed using an espresso machine or a strong coffee concentrate from another method.
- Store any leftover vanilla syrup and caramel sauce in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
