Ingredients
Apples
- 2 Granny Smith apples
Chocolate Coating
- 2 cups dark chocolate chips (divided)
Caramel Drizzle
- 1 cup caramel squares
- 1 teaspoon water
Optional Toppings
- Mini chocolate chips
- M&Ms
- Sprinkles
- Crushed Oreos
- Chopped nuts
- Melted white chocolate
Instructions
- Prepare Baking Sheets: Line one or two large baking sheets with parchment paper to prevent the apple slices from sticking and to make cleanup easier.
- Slice Apples and Insert Sticks: Slice the apples into full rounds about 1/4 inch thick, avoiding wedges. Firmly insert a candy sucker stick into the bottom of each apple slice; if needed, make a small hole first with a knife to aid insertion. Place the slices on a paper towel.
- Dry the Apples: Lay a second paper towel over the apple slices and gently pat them dry to remove excess moisture.
- Melt Chocolate (First Portion): In a shallow microwave-safe bowl, add 1 cup of dark chocolate chips. Microwave for 30 seconds, then stir well. Continue microwaving in 10-15 second bursts while stirring until the chocolate is fully melted and smooth.
- Coat Apple Slices in Chocolate: Pat the apple slices dry again to ensure no moisture remains. Dip each slice into the melted chocolate, fully coating it slightly past the base of the stick for better adhesion. Alternatively, spoon chocolate over the slices ensuring complete coverage so that juice doesn’t interfere with the chocolate sticking.
- Remove Excess Chocolate and Set: Gently scrape off excess chocolate from each slice and place them on the prepared baking sheet to begin setting.
- Repeat with Remaining Chocolate: Continue coating all apple slices using the first batch of melted chocolate. When that runs out, melt the remaining 1 cup of chocolate chips following the melting method, and coat the remaining slices.
- Melt Caramel: In a second shallow microwave-safe bowl, combine caramel squares with 1 teaspoon of water. Microwave for 30 seconds, stir, and if needed, continue microwaving in 10-15 second increments until completely melted and smooth.
- Drizzle Caramel: Use a spoon or fork to drizzle the melted caramel over the chocolate-coated apple slices in any pattern or design you prefer.
- Add Optional Toppings: Immediately apply any optional toppings such as mini chocolate chips, M&Ms, sprinkles, crushed Oreos, chopped nuts, or drizzle melted white chocolate over the caramel before it sets.
- Chill to Set: Place the decorated apple slices in the refrigerator for 15-30 minutes, or until the chocolate and caramel coatings are fully set and firm.
Notes
- Ensure the apple slices are patted dry thoroughly between steps to help the chocolate and caramel adhere better.
- Using Granny Smith apples gives a tart contrast that complements the sweetness of chocolate and caramel.
- Customize toppings based on preference or occasion for added texture and color.
- Store leftover caramel apple slices in the refrigerator to keep coatings firm and apples fresh.
- For a white chocolate variation, melt white chocolate chips separately and drizzle for a decorative finish.
