Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons tahini
- 2 tablespoons Greek yogurt (optional)
- Juice of 1/2 lemon (or lime, more to taste)
- 1-2 garlic cloves
- 1 can (15 ounce) chickpeas, drained
- 2 ripe avocados
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- ½ teaspoon smoked paprika (instead of or mixed with cayenne)
- Salt, to taste
- 1 handful fresh cilantro
- 2-3 ice cubes (as needed for texture)
Instructions
- Prepare Ingredients: Gather all ingredients, making sure the chickpeas are drained and the avocados are ripe and peeled for smooth blending.
- Add Ingredients to Food Processor: Place the tahini, Greek yogurt, and lemon juice into the food processor first, followed by garlic cloves, chickpeas, avocados, ground cumin, smoked paprika, salt, and fresh cilantro.
- Blend Until Smooth: Process all ingredients together until the mixture is smooth and well combined, scraping down the sides if necessary to ensure even blending.
- Add Ice Cubes for Texture: With the food processor running, add ice cubes one at a time to lighten the mixture and achieve a creamy, fluffy texture. Use 2-3 cubes or as needed.
- Adjust Seasoning: Taste the hummus and add more lemon juice, salt, or spices if desired to suit your palate.
- Serve: Transfer to a serving bowl and optionally garnish with a drizzle of olive oil, a sprinkle of smoked paprika, and additional fresh cilantro. Serve immediately with pita, vegetables, or crackers.
Notes
- Using ripe avocados is key for a creamy texture; underripe avocados may result in a less smooth hummus.
- Greek yogurt is optional and can be omitted for a dairy-free or vegan variation.
- Adjust lemon juice and garlic to taste for preferred acidity and pungency.
- Adding ice cubes helps lighten the hummus and improve texture, but can be skipped if you prefer a denser dip.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days; the avocado may darken slightly but can be refreshed with a stir and a squeeze of lemon.
