This Asian Ground Beef Bowl is a quick and flavorful stir-fry recipe perfect for a weeknight dinner. Ground beef is cooked with aromatic garlic and onion, then tossed in a savory sauce made from soy and oyster sauce, balanced with a touch of sweetness and heat. Red bell peppers and green onions add freshness and color, making a deliciously balanced bowl served over rice, garnished with toasted sesame seeds.

  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

Meat and Vegetables

  • 500 grams lean ground beef
  • 1/2 onion, chopped
  • 1/2 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1 red bell pepper, chopped
  • 1/3 cup green onion, chopped

Sauces and Seasonings

  • 2 tablespoons oil (vegetable or canola)
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon sriracha (increase up to 1 teaspoon for extra hot)
  • 1/2 teaspoon toasted sesame oil

Thickener

  • 2 teaspoons cornflour
  • 2 tablespoons water

Instructions

  1. Make Stir Fry Sauce: Combine soy sauce, oyster sauce, sugar, sriracha, toasted sesame oil, cornflour, and water in a small bowl. Whisk well until the cornflour is fully dissolved. Set the sauce aside.
  2. Prep Ingredients: Chop onion, mince garlic, slice red bell pepper, and chop green onions. Keep all prepared ingredients ready for stir-frying.
  3. Cook Aromatics: Heat oil in a wok or large skillet over medium-high heat. Add chopped onion and minced garlic. Sauté until onion softens and garlic is fragrant, about 2-3 minutes.
  4. Cook Ground Beef: Add the ground beef to the wok, breaking it apart with a spatula. Cook on medium-high heat until no longer pink and nicely browned, with most of the liquid evaporated, about 5-7 minutes.
  5. Add Sauce: Pour the prepared stir-fry sauce over the cooked beef. Stir continuously and cook for 1-2 minutes until the sauce thickens and becomes glossy, coating the beef evenly.
  6. Add Vegetables and Finish: Toss in the chopped red bell pepper and green onions. Stir quickly to combine and heat through for about 1 minute. Turn off the heat immediately to retain vegetable crunch.
  7. Serve: Spoon the ground beef mixture over warm cooked rice. Garnish with extra chopped green onions and toasted sesame seeds if desired.

Notes

  • For extra heat, increase sriracha to 1 teaspoon or add chili flakes.
  • Use lean ground beef to reduce excess oil and calories.
  • Serve with jasmine or basmati rice for authentic flavor.
  • To make it gluten-free, substitute soy sauce with tamari.
  • Leftovers keep well refrigerated for up to 3 days; reheat thoroughly before serving.
