Ingredients
For the Apple Filling
- 2 cans (21 oz each) apple pie filling
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- ½ tsp nutmeg (optional)
For the Cake Topping
- 1 box yellow cake mix
- ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
- ½ cup chopped nuts (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Dish: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-by-13-inch baking dish thoroughly to prevent sticking.
- Layer Apple Filling: Evenly spread both cans of apple pie filling across the bottom of the prepared baking dish, creating a uniform layer.
- Season the Filling: Sprinkle ground cinnamon and nutmeg (if using) evenly over the apple pie filling to infuse warm spices throughout the dessert.
- Add Cake Mix: Sprinkle the dry yellow cake mix evenly on top of the spiced apple layer. Ensure the cake mix covers the apples but do not stir or mix layers.
- Drizzle Butter: Slowly drizzle the melted unsalted butter over the surface of the dry cake mix, trying to cover as much as possible. This butter will moisten and bake the cake layer to a golden crust.
- Add Nuts: If desired, sprinkle chopped nuts evenly over the top of the cobbler for added texture and flavor.
- Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 45 to 50 minutes until the top is golden brown and the filling is bubbly around the edges.
- Cool and Serve: Remove the cobbler cake from the oven and allow it to cool slightly for 10-15 minutes before serving. This allows the filling to set slightly and enhances the flavor.
- Enjoy: Scoop the Apple Cobbler Cake onto plates and serve warm. Vanilla ice cream on the side is highly recommended for an extra indulgent dessert experience.
Notes
- Do not stir the cake mix into the apple filling; it should remain as a dry layer on top before baking.
- Using unsalted butter allows you better control over the salt content in the dessert.
- Chopped nuts can be walnuts, pecans, or almonds based on personal preference.
- Letting the dessert cool slightly helps prevent burns from hot filling and improves texture.
- For a gluten-free option, substitute the yellow cake mix with a gluten-free cake mix.
- Leftovers can be stored covered in the refrigerator for 3-4 days and reheated before serving.
