This Apple and Pear Chutney offers a delightful blend of sweet and tangy flavors with a hint of warm spices. Made with fresh pears, green apples, and raisins simmered with vinegar, sugar, and aromatic spices, this chutney is perfect as a condiment to accompany cheeses, meats, or as a flavorful spread.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 15 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients

Fruits and Vegetables

  • 5 fresh pears (finely chopped, Bartlett or Bosc works well)
  • 2 green apples (finely chopped)
  • 1 onion (chopped)
  • 1 bell pepper (chopped)

Dry Ingredients and Spices

  • 1 cup raisins (Thompson or golden)
  • 1 ¼ cup coconut sugar (or any granulated sugar of choice)
  • 2 teaspoons yellow mustard seeds
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves

Liquids and Others

  • 1 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons fresh ginger root (grated or minced)

Instructions

  1. Combine ingredients: In a large pot set over medium heat, add the finely chopped pears, green apples, chopped onion, chopped bell pepper, raisins, coconut sugar, apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, grated ginger, yellow mustard seeds, salt, ground nutmeg, ground cinnamon, and ground cloves. Stir everything together thoroughly to combine the flavors evenly.
  2. Simmer the mixture: Allow the mixture to come to a simmer. Once simmering, cover the pot with a lid and reduce the heat to medium-low to maintain a gentle simmer, which helps the ingredients meld without burning.
  3. Cook until thickened: Let the chutney simmer uncovered or partially covered (depending on desired thickness) for about 1 hour, stirring occasionally. The chutney should reduce considerably and develop a thick, smooth, gel-like consistency as the fruits soften and the flavors concentrate.
  4. Cool and serve: After cooking, remove from heat and allow the chutney to cool. Transfer to sterilized jars or containers. The chutney can be enjoyed immediately or refrigerated for enhanced flavor development. Serve as a condiment or accompaniment as desired.

Notes

  • You can substitute coconut sugar with brown sugar or white granulated sugar depending on your preference.
  • Adjust the amount of salt and spices to suit your taste.
  • Store chutney in airtight jars in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks for best freshness.
  • This chutney pairs wonderfully with cheeses, grilled meats, or as a spread on sandwiches.
