This decadent Alaskan Snow Crab Mac ‘n Cheese combines tender pasta with succulent snow crab meat and a creamy, cheesy sauce made from Havarti and Gruyere cheeses. Topped with buttery Panko breadcrumbs and baked to golden perfection, this dish offers a rich, flavorful twist on the classic comfort food.

  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients

Seafood

  • 8 ounces Alaskan Snow Crab Meat (meat from 3 clusters)

Pasta

  • 1 pound pasta (cooked al dente)

Dairy & Fats

  • 1 stick (1/2 cup) butter, divided
  • 3 cups Half & Half
  • 8 ounces Havarti cheese, shredded
  • 8 ounces Gruyere cheese, shredded

Dry Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1 1/2 cups Panko Bread Crumbs

Seasonings & Flavorings

  • 3 teaspoons garlic puree
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon chives
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with non-stick cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  2. Cook Pasta: Boil a large pot of salted water, then cook the pasta until al dente according to package instructions. Drain, rinse briefly under cold water to stop cooking, and set aside.
  3. Make Roux and Sauce: In the same pot, melt half the butter (1/2 stick). Add the garlic puree and cook briefly. Gradually whisk in the flour over medium-low heat to form a roux, making sure no lumps form. Slowly whisk in the lemon juice and half & half, continuing to whisk until the sauce thickens.
  4. Add Cheese & Seasoning: Remove the pot from heat and slowly mix in shredded Havarti and Gruyere cheeses. Stir in the chives, salt, and pepper to flavor the cheese sauce evenly.
  5. Combine with Crab & Pasta: Fold the snow crab meat and cooked pasta into the cheese sauce, ensuring the ingredients are well coated and evenly distributed.
  6. Prepare Topping: In a small pan, melt the remaining butter (1/2 stick). Add Panko bread crumbs, stirring to coat them thoroughly with butter for a crisp, golden topping.
  7. Assemble and Bake: Pour the crab and pasta mixture into the prepared baking dish, spread evenly, then sprinkle the buttered Panko crumbs over the top. Bake in the preheated oven for about 25 minutes until bubbly and golden on top.

Notes

  • For best flavor, use fresh or high-quality Alaskan Snow Crab meat.
  • Cooking pasta al dente is important to prevent it from becoming mushy after baking.
  • Be careful to whisk continuously when adding the half & half to avoid lumps in the sauce.
  • You can substitute half & half with whole milk for a lighter sauce but expect less creaminess.
  • The Panko breadcrumb topping adds a delightful crunch, but you can use regular breadcrumbs if needed.
