Ingredients
Dough
- ½ cup warm milk
- 5 g (1 tsp) instant yeast
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 2 cups flour
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 extra-large egg
- 1 tbsp softened butter
Filling & Topping
- ⅓ cup softened butter
- ¼ cup brown sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- ¼ cup cream (to be poured over the buns before air frying)
Icing
- ½ cup cream cheese (room temperature)
- ¾ cups powdered sugar / icing sugar (sifted)
- ½ tsp lemon juice
- ½ tsp vanilla paste / vanilla extract
Instructions
- Activate Yeast: Whisk the warm milk, sugar, and instant yeast together in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the dough hook. Allow the mixture to stand for 5 minutes until it becomes frothy, indicating the yeast is active.
- Add Egg and Dry Ingredients: Whisk in the extra-large egg, then add the flour and salt to the bowl. Mix until the ingredients begin to combine.
- Add Butter and Knead Dough: Add the softened butter, then knead the dough using the stand mixer dough hook for 5 minutes until the dough starts pulling away from the sides of the bowl. If the dough is sticky, add 1 to 2 tablespoons of flour and continue kneading.
- First Rise: Transfer the dough to a greased bowl, cover it with plastic wrap, and place it in the refrigerator to rise overnight.
- Bring Dough to Room Temperature: Remove the dough from the fridge and let it come to room temperature for about 1 hour.
- Prepare Filling: Combine the softened butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon in a small bowl and set aside.
- Roll and Fill Dough: On a floured surface, roll the dough into a large rectangle approximately ½ to 1 cm thick. Evenly spread the cinnamon sugar mixture over the dough, then roll it tightly into a long log.
- Slice Rolls: Cut the rolled dough into 5 cm (2 inch) thick slices and place them in a greased baking dish.
- Second Rise: Allow the rolls to rise for 30 minutes at room temperature.
- Preheat Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 180°C (350°F).
- Add Cream: Pour ¼ cup of cream evenly over the rolls before cooking.
- Air Fry Rolls: Place the baking dish with rolls into the air fryer basket and air fry for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the rolls are puffed up and golden brown.
- Prepare Icing: While the rolls cool for 10 to 15 minutes, whisk together the room temperature cream cheese, sifted powdered sugar, lemon juice, and vanilla paste or extract until smooth. You can also use a food processor to combine these ingredients efficiently.
- Serve: Spread the cream cheese icing generously over the warm cinnamon rolls and serve immediately for the best flavor.
Notes
- Letting the dough rise overnight enhances the flavor and texture of the cinnamon rolls.
- If your air fryer is small, you may need to cook the rolls in batches.
- Be sure to use room temperature cream cheese for the smoothest icing.
- You can customize the filling by adding chopped nuts or raisins if desired.
- Ensure the cream is poured evenly over the rolls before air frying to keep them moist.
