This Walmart Glow-Up Cake with Peanut Butter Cups is a decadent layered dessert combining store-bought yellow cakes with a rich, creamy chocolate frosting and an abundance of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. Easy to assemble yet visually impressive, this cake delivers indulgent chocolate and peanut butter flavors perfect for celebrations or an irresistible treat.

  • Total Time: 20 minutes (plus chilling time)
  • Yield: 12 servings

Ingredients

For the Cake

  • 3 store-bought 6-inch round yellow cakes (each about 1.5 inches tall, two layers inside) – we used Walmart
  • 48 Peanut Butter Cups, cut in half – we used Reese’s

For the Frosting

  • 1 cup salted butter, softened (2 sticks)
  • 16 ounces powdered sugar (about 4 cups)
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder – we used Nestle
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cakes: Unwrap the store-bought yellow cakes and set them on a clean surface. If the cakes have layers, ensure they are intact and level.
  2. Cut the Peanut Butter Cups: Cut 48 Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups in half. Set aside for decorating and layering.
  3. Make the Frosting: In a large bowl, beat 1 cup of softened salted butter until creamy. Gradually add 16 ounces of powdered sugar, mixing well after each addition. Add ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, mixing until combined. Slowly pour in 1 cup heavy whipping cream while whipping the mixture until light, fluffy, and spreadable.
  4. Assemble the Cake Layers: Place the first yellow cake round on a serving plate. Spread a generous layer of chocolate frosting over the top. Arrange halved peanut butter cups over the frosting layer evenly.
  5. Stack and Repeat: Add the second yellow cake round on top of the first decorated layer. Repeat the frosting and peanut butter cup layering. Place the third cake on top and cover the entire cake with the remaining chocolate frosting, smoothing it out evenly.
  6. Decorate: Use the remaining peanut butter cup halves to decorate the sides and top of the cake as desired. Press gently so they stick to the frosting.
  7. Chill and Serve: Chill the assembled cake in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour to set the frosting before serving. Slice and enjoy your delicious Walmart Glow-Up Cake!

Notes

  • For best results, use cakes that are fresh and firm to avoid crumbling during assembly.
  • The frosting can be adjusted in sweetness or thickness by varying the powdered sugar and cream.
  • This cake keeps well refrigerated for up to 3 days; bring to room temperature before serving.
  • Feel free to substitute peanut butter cups with other candy for variation.
