Ingredients
1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1 cup granulated sugar (or confectioner’s sugar)
½ teaspoon Kosher salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
6 tablespoons canola oil (or vegetable/flavorless oil)
1 tablespoon white vinegar
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 cup cold water
For frosting: 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, 1–2 tablespoons milk or non-dairy milk, 1 cup confectioner’s sugar, ⅛ teaspoon salt (optional), ½ teaspoon vanilla extract, sprinkles for decorating
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease an 8-inch round or square cake pan.
- Whisk together flour, sugar, salt, baking soda, and cocoa powder in a large bowl.
- Add oil, vinegar, vanilla, and cold water; mix until smooth and combined.
- Pour batter into prepared pan and smooth the top.
- Bake 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Cool completely in pan on a wire rack.
- For frosting: mix butter, milk, confectioner’s sugar, salt, and vanilla until smooth and spreadable.
- Spread frosting evenly over cooled cake.
- Decorate with sprinkles before serving.
