This classic Salisbury Steak recipe features tender ground beef patties simmered in a rich, savory mushroom gravy. Perfectly seasoned and cooked in a skillet, it delivers a comforting homemade meal ideal for family dinners. Serve it with mashed potatoes, rice, or your favorite vegetables for a satisfying dish.

  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

For the Patties

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 2 tablespoons A1 steak sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon homemade steak seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon butter

For the Gravy

  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1 medium onion, sliced thin
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 ½ cups beef broth (or stock)
  • Salt and freshly cracked pepper, to taste
  • 8 oz sliced baby Bella mushrooms

Instructions

  1. Make the Patties: In a medium bowl, combine ground beef, egg, panko breadcrumbs, A1 steak sauce, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, steak seasoning, garlic powder, and onion powder. Use your hands to mix thoroughly, then shape into 4 round patties about ¾ to 1 inch thick.
  2. Cook the Patties: Heat 1 tablespoon of butter in a medium skillet over medium heat. Once melted, add the patties and cook for 5 minutes on each side, or until fully cooked through. Remove patties from the skillet and place on a plate; cover with foil or a lid to keep warm.
  3. Prepare the Pan for Gravy: If there is more than 1 tablespoon of grease left from cooking the patties, carefully spoon off the excess, leaving about 1 tablespoon in the skillet. Do not clean the skillet to retain pan drippings for flavor.
  4. Sauté Onions: Add 3 tablespoons of butter to the skillet. Use a spoon to scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook for about 5 minutes until they are translucent and soft.
  5. Make the Roux: Stir in the flour with the butter and onions, cooking for about 2 minutes until the flour is lightly browned, which helps develop a rich flavor and thickens the gravy.
  6. Add Broth and Season: Gradually pour in the beef broth while stirring continuously to avoid lumps. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes, stirring often until the gravy begins to thicken. Season with salt and freshly cracked pepper to taste, adjusting seasoning as needed.
  7. Simmer with Mushrooms and Patties: Add the sliced mushrooms and return the cooked beef patties to the skillet. Reduce heat to low and simmer gently for 7 to 10 minutes until the mushrooms are tender and the gravy has thickened to your liking.
  8. Serve: Serve your Salisbury steak hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or your favorite vegetables. Warm bread is also recommended to soak up the delicious mushroom gravy.

Notes

  • You can substitute beef broth with stock for even richer flavor.
  • Make sure not to overmix the patty mixture to maintain tenderness.
  • Use gloves for mixing if preferred for easier handling and cleanliness.
  • Leftover gravy can be stored and reheated, thickening with a little extra broth if needed.
