Delight in these elegant Puff Pastry Apple Roses, a visually stunning and delicious dessert featuring thinly sliced red apples layered on buttery puff pastry, sprinkled with brown sugar, and accented with a touch of lemon juice and cream cheese. Perfect for a refined afternoon treat or a charming dessert presentation.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 5 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

For the Apple Roses

  • 2 medium red apples
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 6 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 teaspoon butter, to brush the muffin tin

For the Filling

  • ¼ cup cream cheese

Instructions

  1. Prepare the apple slices: Core the apples and slice them in half. Using a mandoline or a sharp knife, thinly slice each apple half. Place the apple slices in a bowl with 2 cups water and 2 tablespoons lemon juice to prevent browning. Microwave or simmer gently to soften the apple slices until pliable, about 3 minutes. Drain and pat dry.
  2. Prepare the puff pastry: Roll out the thawed puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface to smooth and slightly thin it. Cut the pastry into 6 equal strips, approximately 2 inches wide and 10-12 inches long.
  3. Assemble the roses: Spread a thin layer of cream cheese along each pastry strip. Arrange the softened apple slices overlapping along the top half of the pastry strip, with the rounded side of the apple slices extending beyond the edge. Sprinkle each strip with brown sugar.
  4. Roll the roses: Carefully fold up the bottom edge of the pastry strip, then gently roll the pastry from one end to the other, encasing the apple slices and forming a rose shape. Repeat with all strips.
  5. Prepare the muffin tin: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly butter a 6-cup muffin tin to prevent sticking.
  6. Bake the roses: Place each rolled apple rose into a muffin cup. Brush the tops lightly with melted butter and sprinkle any remaining brown sugar. Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes or until the pastry is golden and cooked through.
  7. Cool and serve: Allow the apple roses to cool in the muffin tin for 5-10 minutes, then carefully remove and transfer to a wire rack. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • Use tart red apples like Gala or Fuji for a nice balance of sweetness and firmness.
  • Soften the apple slices enough to make them flexible but not mushy to achieve perfect rose petals.
  • Thaw the puff pastry completely before use to prevent cracking when rolling.
  • For extra flavor, sprinkle cinnamon with the brown sugar before baking.
  • These apple roses can be prepared a few hours in advance and gently reheated before serving.
