Ingredients
1 ½ pounds ground beef (93% lean)
1 ½ Tablespoons steak seasoning
1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 medium onion, thinly sliced
12 slices bread (Artisan, rye, or sourdough)
¼ cup butter
18 slices Swiss cheese
¼–½ cup thousand island dressing
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a skillet, cook ground beef with steak seasoning and Worcestershire sauce until browned. Drain grease.
- In another skillet, melt butter and cook onions over medium-low heat until caramelized and golden.
- Lightly butter bread slices on one side.
- In a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, place a layer of bread (butter side down).
- Spread half of beef mixture over bread, then layer with caramelized onions, Swiss cheese slices, and a drizzle of thousand island dressing.
- Repeat layers with remaining beef, onions, cheese, and dressing.
- Top with remaining bread (butter side up) and finish with remaining Swiss cheese.
- Bake uncovered for 25–30 minutes, until bread is golden and cheese melted.
- Cool slightly, slice into squares, and serve.
Notes
Use rye bread for a more traditional flavor, or sourdough/Texas toast for variety.
Swap Swiss cheese for provolone, cheddar, or pepper jack.
Serve with extra thousand island dressing on the side for dipping.
Add jalapeños, mushrooms, pickles.
Freeze before baking for a convenient make-ahead meal.
