Ingredients
Salad Ingredients
- 2 hearts romaine lettuce
- 4-5 green onions, thinly sliced
- ¼ cup fresh dill, chopped (or substitute with fresh parsley, fresh mint, or dried oregano)
- ½ cucumber (optional)
- ¼ cup feta cheese, crumbled (optional)
- Kalamata olives (optional)
Dressing
- 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice or red wine vinegar
- 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
- ½ teaspoon dried oregano
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Instructions
- Prepare the Lettuce: Gently wash the romaine lettuce under cold running water to remove any dirt. Dry thoroughly using a salad spinner or pat dry with a kitchen towel. Thinly slice the lettuce crosswise into about ½ inch pieces.
- Prepare the Herbs and Onions: Wash the fresh dill, pat it dry with paper towels or a clean cloth, and chop finely. Thinly slice the green onions.
- Assemble the Salad: Place the sliced lettuce, chopped dill, and green onions into a large salad bowl. If desired, add optional ingredients such as thinly sliced cucumber, crumbled feta cheese, and Kalamata olives to enhance the flavor and texture.
- Make the Dressing: In a small jar or mixing bowl, combine the freshly squeezed lemon juice (or red wine vinegar), extra virgin olive oil, dried oregano, salt, and freshly ground black pepper. Mix well to emulsify the dressing.
- Toss and Serve: Drizzle the dressing over the salad ingredients in the bowl. Toss gently but thoroughly to ensure all salad components are evenly coated with the dressing. Serve immediately to enjoy the fresh flavors and crisp textures.
Notes
- For variation, try adding fresh parsley or mint along with or instead of dill.
- The original maroulosalata features only lettuce, dill, and green onions; additional toppings like feta and olives are optional but add delicious flavor.
- Use freshly squeezed lemon juice for the best bright and tangy dressing taste.
- Serve immediately after tossing to keep the lettuce crisp and fresh.
- This salad pairs beautifully with grilled meats or seafood for a balanced Mediterranean meal.
