Magnolia Bakery Banana Pudding is a classic Southern dessert featuring layers of creamy vanilla pudding, fresh bananas, and crispy Nilla Wafers, all topped with fluffy whipped cream. This no-bake treat is perfect for parties or family gatherings, delivering rich, comforting flavors with a smooth and luscious texture.

  • Total Time: 4 hours 20 minutes
  • Yield: 16 servings

Ingredients

For the Pudding Base

  • 1 (14-oz) can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 cup very cold milk
  • ½ cup very cold water
  • 1 (3.4 oz) box instant vanilla pudding mix

For the Assembly

  • 1 (11-12 oz) box Nilla Wafers (reserve 5-6 wafers and crumbs from the box)
  • 5 just barely ripe bananas, sliced

For the Whipped Cream Topping

  • 3 cups heavy whipping cream
  • ½ teaspoon clear vanilla flavoring

Instructions

  1. Combine Liquids: Using a hand-held or stand mixer, mix the sweetened condensed milk, cold water, and cold milk together on low to medium speed for 1-2 minutes until fully blended.
  2. Add Pudding Mix: Add the instant vanilla pudding mix to the liquid mixture and beat on medium speed for 2 minutes. The pudding mixture should just begin to thicken.
  3. Chill Pudding: Cover the pudding mixture and refrigerate for 4 hours or overnight to allow it to fully set and thicken.
  4. Whip Cream: In a separate bowl, combine the heavy whipping cream and vanilla flavoring. Beat with a mixer until stiff peaks form.
  5. Fold Whipped Cream into Pudding: Gently fold the whipped cream into the fully set pudding until the mixture is uniform in color and texture with no streaks.
  6. Layer Dessert: In a large serving bowl, trifle dish, or individual dishes, place a layer of about one-third of the Nilla Wafers (approximately 30 wafers) at the bottom.
  7. Add Bananas: Evenly layer 1½ cups of the sliced bananas over the wafers.
  8. Add Pudding Layer: Spread one-third of the pudding mixture evenly over the banana layer.
  9. Repeat Layers: Repeat layering wafers, bananas, and pudding two more times, resulting in three total layers of each.
  10. Finish with Crushed Wafers: Crush the reserved 5-6 wafers and sprinkle their crumbs over the top of the final pudding layer. You may also sprinkle any leftover wafer crumbs for extra texture.
  11. Refrigerate and Serve: Cover the assembled banana pudding and keep refrigerated until ready to serve. Best served chilled.

Notes

  • For best results, use just barely ripe bananas to avoid browning and maintain freshness.
  • The pudding mixture requires refrigeration for at least 4 hours to fully set, but overnight chilling enhances the flavor and texture.
  • Gentle folding of the whipped cream prevents deflating and keeps the pudding light and airy.
  • You can prepare this dessert a day in advance and keep it refrigerated until serving.
  • Use clear vanilla flavoring to maintain the pudding’s white color and clean vanilla taste.
