Transform your breakfast with this rich and creamy Homemade Buttermilk Syrup! Made with simple ingredients like butter, sugar, buttermilk, and vanilla, this syrup delivers the perfect balance of sweetness and tang. It’s the ultimate topping for pancakes, waffles, and French toast—better than any store-bought syrup!

  • Total Time: 10 minutes
  • Yield: 8-10 servings

Ingredients

1/2 cup butter

1 cup sugar

1/2 cup buttermilk

1 tablespoon Light Karo Syrup

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Melt the Butter:

    • In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.

  2. Add Sugar, Buttermilk, and Karo Syrup:

    • Once the butter is melted, stir in the sugar, buttermilk, and Light Karo Syrup. Bring the mixture to a simmer, stirring constantly.

  3. Simmer and Add Baking Soda:

    • Let the mixture simmer for 2-3 minutes while stirring. Add the baking soda and stir quickly. The syrup will bubble and foam, so keep an eye on it.

  4. Add Vanilla Extract:

    • After the syrup has thickened slightly, remove it from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract.

  5. Serve Warm:

    • Let the syrup cool for a few minutes before serving it warm over pancakes, waffles, or French toast. Store leftovers in an airtight container.

Notes

The syrup has a rich, pourable consistency. For a thicker syrup, simmer a bit longer.

You can substitute brown sugar for a deeper caramelized flavor.

Reheat leftovers in the microwave or stovetop with a splash of milk or water to restore consistency.
