This Ground Beef Cheesesteak recipe offers a quick and satisfying twist on the classic Philly cheesesteak sandwich, using ground beef cooked with simple seasonings and melted cheese. Served on toasted hoagie rolls, it makes a flavorful, hearty meal perfect for any occasion.

  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

Meat and Seasonings

  • 2 lbs ground beef (80-85% lean)
  • 1 ½ teaspoons kosher salt (or to taste)
  • 1 ½ teaspoons black pepper (or to taste)
  • 1 ½ teaspoons granulated garlic (or to taste)
  • 1 ½ teaspoons dried parsley (or to taste)

Other Ingredients

  • 1/2-1 tablespoon avocado oil
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (provolone or American recommended)
  • 4 hoagie rolls (sub rolls or Amoroso rolls recommended)

Instructions

  1. Heat the skillet: Place a large skillet over medium-high heat and add 1/2 to 1 tablespoon of avocado oil to coat the bottom of the pan evenly.
  2. Cook and season the beef: Add the 2 pounds of ground beef to the hot skillet. Season with kosher salt, black pepper, granulated garlic, and dried parsley. Using a meat masher or potato masher, break up the beef while cooking. Continue stirring until the beef is fully browned and the fat has rendered into the meat. Do not drain off the fat to keep flavor and moisture.
  3. Melt the cheese into the beef: Lower the heat to low. Sprinkle the shredded cheese evenly over the browned beef. Stir continuously until the cheese has completely melted and is evenly incorporated into the meat mixture.
  4. Assemble the sandwiches: Spoon the cheesy ground beef mixture evenly into the 4 hoagie rolls or sub rolls, ensuring each sandwich is well filled.
  5. Serve: Serve the cheesesteak sandwiches immediately. Optionally, add banana peppers or your favorite toppings for extra flavor and a mild kick.

Notes

  • Use 80-85% lean ground beef for the best balance of flavor and juiciness.
  • Do not drain the fat after browning the beef to maintain moisture and richness in the filling.
  • Provolone cheese is a traditional choice for cheesesteaks, but American or mozzarella cheese also works well.
  • If preferred, lightly toast the rolls before assembling to add crunch and prevent sogginess.
  • Adding sautéed onions, mushrooms, or peppers can elevate the flavor profile if desired.
  • Serve immediately for best texture; leftover filling can be refrigerated for up to 3 days.
