  • Total Time: 1 hour 10 minutes
  • Yield: 12 servings

Ingredients

For the Cake: 2 cups all-purpose flour, 3/4 cup salted butter (room temp), 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 1/2 tsp baking powder, 1/4 tsp salt, 1 large egg, 1 tsp pure vanilla extract

For the Apple Filling: 5 apples (peeled & diced), 1 1/2 cups unsweetened applesauce, 2 tbsp granulated sugar, 1 tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice, 1 tsp lemon zest, 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

For the Streusel Topping: 2 cups all-purpose flour, 3/4 cup cold salted butter (cubed), 3/4 cup granulated sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking pan.
  2. Prepare the crust: mix flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. Add butter, egg, and vanilla; mix until a dough forms. Press evenly into pan.
  3. For the filling: combine diced apples, applesauce, sugar, lemon juice, lemon zest, and cinnamon. Spread evenly over crust.
  4. Prepare streusel topping: cut butter into flour and sugar until crumbly. Sprinkle over apple filling.
  5. Bake 45–50 minutes, until top is golden and filling bubbles slightly.
  6. Cool slightly before slicing and serving.

Notes

Use a mix of tart and sweet apples for more depth of flavor.

Top with powdered sugar, whipped cream, or vanilla ice cream for extra indulgence.

Substitute applesauce with pear sauce for a unique twist.

Add walnuts or pecans to the streusel for extra crunch.

Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temp for 2 days, in fridge for 5 days, or freeze up to 3 months.
