Empty Tomb Rolls are a delightful and symbolic treat perfect for Easter or any special occasion. Soft rolls filled with melted marshmallows, coated in cinnamon sugar, and baked until golden create a sweet, gooey surprise reminiscent of an empty tomb. This recipe is easy to prepare and yields a batch of comforting, delicious rolls that kids and adults alike will love.

  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 12 servings

Ingredients

Dough

  • 12 Rhodes Rolls (or homemade dough or crescent roll dough)

Filling & Coating

  • 12 normal sized marshmallows
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • ⅓ cup butter (melted)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Heat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9×13-inch or 9-inch round baking dish, or alternatively, a muffin tin for individual rolls.
  2. Prepare Cinnamon Sugar: In a small bowl, combine the granulated sugar and ground cinnamon thoroughly to create the cinnamon sugar mixture.
  3. Shape Dough Circles: Press each piece of dough out into a circle large enough to enclose a marshmallow comfortably.
  4. Coat Marshmallows: Dip a marshmallow into the melted butter, then roll it in the cinnamon sugar mixture until fully coated.
  5. Fill and Seal Rolls: Place each coated marshmallow onto the center of the dough circle, then pinch the dough closed completely around the marshmallow to seal it inside.
  6. Coat Rolls: Roll each sealed dough ball in the remaining melted butter and then coat it evenly with the cinnamon sugar mixture, ensuring a sweet cinnamon crust.
  7. Arrange in Baking Dish: Place the prepared rolls into the greased baking dish or muffin tin, spacing them slightly apart to allow for expansion.
  8. Rest before Baking: Let the rolls rest at room temperature for 15 minutes to allow the dough to rise slightly.
  9. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for approximately 15 minutes or until the rolls are golden brown and the marshmallow filling is melted inside.
  10. Serve Warm: Remove from the oven and serve immediately to enjoy the gooey melted marshmallow center and warm cinnamon sugar coating.

Notes

  • If using homemade dough, ensure it is proofed adequately before shaping rolls.
  • For a richer flavor, use unsalted butter and adjust salt in dough accordingly.
  • These rolls are best enjoyed fresh from the oven as the marshmallow filling may harden upon cooling.
  • Variations can include adding chopped nuts or drizzling with a simple glaze after baking.
  • To make clean-up easier, line the baking dish with parchment paper.
  • Ensure rolls are sealed tightly to prevent marshmallow leakage during baking.
