Ingredients
Brats
- 5 bratwurst sausages
- 5 buns (optional)
Toppings
- 1 cup sautéed onions (about 1 large onion, thinly sliced and cooked until golden)
- Mustard, to taste
- Sauerkraut, to taste
Instructions
- Preheat the air fryer: Set your air fryer to 350°F (175°C) and allow it to preheat for about 3-5 minutes to ensure even cooking.
- Prepare the brats: Place the bratwurst sausages in a single layer inside the air fryer basket, ensuring they have space between them for air circulation.
- Cook the brats: Air fry the bratwurst at 350°F for 12-15 minutes, turning them halfway through the cooking time to achieve an even golden brown color and to ensure they are cooked through.
- Toast the buns (optional): If desired, add the buns to the air fryer for the last 2-3 minutes to toast them lightly.
- Prepare toppings: While the brats cook, sauté onions over medium heat in a skillet until soft and caramelized for about 8-10 minutes. Warm up the sauerkraut if preferred.
- Assemble and serve: Place each brat on a toasted bun, top with sautéed onions, a smear of mustard, and sauerkraut as desired. Serve immediately for best taste.
Notes
- You can cook frozen brats, but increase cooking time by 3-5 minutes.
- Use a meat thermometer to ensure brats reach an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C) for safe consumption.
- Try different toppings such as cheese, relish, or spicy peppers to customize your brats.
- For a lower fat option, drain any fat from the basket halfway through cooking.
