Ingredients
Breads
- 2 eight inch hoagie rolls, sliced
Vegetables
- ½ green bell pepper, sliced
- 1 small onion, sliced
- 4 button mushrooms, sliced
Meat and Dairy
- 16 ounces boneless ribeye steak, thin sliced
- 4 slices white American cheese
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided
Seasonings
- salt and pepper, to taste
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
Instructions
- Prepare the Rolls: Slice the hoagie rolls lengthwise and set aside for toasting later.
- Sauté Vegetables: Heat 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced green bell pepper, onion, and mushrooms. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are tender and slightly caramelized, about 5-7 minutes. Remove the vegetables from the skillet and set aside.
- Cook the Steak: In the same skillet, add the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter. Increase heat to medium-high and add the thinly sliced ribeye steak. Season with salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Cook the steak quickly, stirring often until browned and just cooked through, about 3-4 minutes.
- Combine Steak and Vegetables: Return the sautéed vegetables to the skillet with the steak. Stir to combine and let the mixture heat through for 1-2 minutes.
- Add Cheese: Place the slices of white American cheese evenly over the steak and vegetable mixture in the skillet. Reduce the heat to low, cover the skillet, and allow the cheese to melt, about 2 minutes.
- Toast the Rolls: While the cheese melts, toast the sliced hoagie rolls in a toaster oven or under a broiler until lightly golden and crisp.
- Assemble the Sandwiches: Using a spatula, carefully scoop the cheesy steak and vegetable filling and pile it onto the toasted hoagie rolls. Serve immediately while hot.
Notes
- Thinly slicing the ribeye steak ensures quick cooking and a tender texture typical of authentic Philly cheesesteaks.
- Using white American cheese gives the sandwich its classic creamy melt; provolone can be an alternative.
- To add more flavor, consider adding a dash of hot sauce or sautéed hot peppers.
- Ribeye steak provides good marbling for flavor, but thinly sliced sirloin can also be used as a leaner option.
- Make sure not to overcook the steak to maintain tenderness and juiciness.
