Ingredients
Meat and Seasoning
- 1 pound ground beef or turkey
- Kosher salt and pepper, to taste
- ½ teaspoon dried basil
- ½ teaspoon dried oregano
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
Sauce and Pasta
- 28 ounces your favorite marinara sauce
- 12 ounces cheese tortellini, cooked according to package instructions
Cheese and Garnishes
- 8 ounces fresh mozzarella, torn into pieces
- Parmesan cheese, for topping
- Fresh basil leaves, for topping
Instructions
- Cook the meat: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef or turkey. Season with kosher salt, pepper, dried basil, and dried oregano. Cook until browned and no longer pink, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks.
- Add garlic: Stir in the minced garlic and cook for about 1 minute until fragrant, being careful not to burn it.
- Simmer with marinara: Pour in the marinara sauce and stir to combine. Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer gently for 5 to 10 minutes to develop the flavors.
- Add cooked tortellini: Stir the cooked cheese tortellini into the sauce mixture, ensuring the pasta is well coated and heated through.
- Add fresh mozzarella: Scatter the torn fresh mozzarella evenly over the top of the skillet. Cover the skillet with a lid and let it sit for a few minutes until the mozzarella melts.
- Serve and garnish: Sprinkle parmesan cheese on top and garnish with fresh basil leaves before serving. Enjoy your cheesy weeknight tortellini skillet warm from the pan.
Notes
- You can substitute ground turkey with ground chicken or beef depending on your preference.
- Use store-bought marinara sauce to save time or make your own for a fresher taste.
- Fresh mozzarella melts better when placed on the skillet while still hot, use the lid to help it melt faster.
- This dish pairs well with a side salad or garlic bread for a complete meal.
- Try adding red pepper flakes if you like a bit of heat.
