Ingredients
1 tablespoon vegetable oil (or a mix with butter)
1 large onion, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons white sugar (optional)
1 cup sour cream
1 cup plain yogurt
½ cup mayonnaise
Salt and ground black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Heat vegetable oil (and optional butter) over medium heat in a large skillet. Add thinly sliced onion.
- Sprinkle sugar over onions and reduce heat to medium-low. Cook, stirring occasionally, until onions are deeply golden and caramelized (30 to 60 minutes).
- Let onions cool slightly, then roughly chop them.
- In a bowl, combine sour cream, yogurt, and mayonnaise until smooth.
- Stir in caramelized onions and season with salt and black pepper to taste.
- Chill for at least 1 hour to allow flavors to meld (optional but recommended).
Notes
Optional: Add cream cheese for a thicker, richer dip.
For a lighter version, swap Greek yogurt or crème fraîche for some of the creamy base.
Enhance flavor by adding Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, or cayenne during caramelization.
Garnish with fresh herbs like chives or parsley, or a drizzle of olive oil for extra brightness.
