Ingredients
Caramel Sauce
- 1 cup (207g) granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup (120ml) water
- 1/4 cup (56g) unsalted butter
- 1/2 cup (120ml) heavy whipping cream
- 1/2 tbsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 to 1 tsp salt
Cinnamon Apples
- 3 Granny Smith apples, peeled and diced
- 2 tsp lemon juice
- 1/8 tsp nutmeg
- 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 4 tbsp (56g) packed brown sugar
Cinnamon Whipped Cream and Granola
- 1 cup (240ml) heavy whipping cream
- 1/2 cup (58g) powdered sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 cup Cinnamon Granola (store-bought or homemade)
Instructions
- Prepare the Caramel Sauce: In a medium saucepan, combine the granulated sugar and water over medium heat. Stir gently until the sugar dissolves, then allow it to boil without stirring until the mixture turns a deep amber color. Remove from heat and carefully whisk in the butter, heavy cream, vanilla extract, and salt until smooth. Set aside to cool.
- Cook the Cinnamon Apples: In a skillet over medium heat, add the diced Granny Smith apples along with lemon juice, nutmeg, cinnamon, and brown sugar. Cook stirring occasionally until the apples are tender and caramelized, about 8-10 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool.
- Make the Cinnamon Whipped Cream: Using a mixer, beat the heavy whipping cream with powdered sugar and ground cinnamon until stiff peaks form. Keep chilled until assembling.
- Assemble the Trifles: In individual serving glasses or bowls, layer caramel sauce, cinnamon apples, cinnamon whipped cream, and cinnamon granola. Repeat the layers as desired, finishing with a sprinkle of granola and a drizzle of caramel sauce on top.
- Chill and Serve: Refrigerate the assembled trifles for at least 30 minutes before serving to allow flavors to meld. Serve chilled and enjoy this delicious autumn-inspired dessert.
Notes
- You can prepare the caramel sauce ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. Rewarm gently before use.
- Use Granny Smith apples for their tartness, which balances the sweetness of the caramel and sugar.
- For a gluten-free option, ensure the granola used is gluten-free.
- If you prefer, substitute store-bought caramel sauce to save time.
- Garnish with a cinnamon stick or apple slices for an elegant presentation.
