Ingredients
4 cube steaks (about 1 1/2 pounds)
1 tbsp Montreal steak seasoning
2 tbsp cooking oil (canola or avocado)
2 medium yellow onions, thinly sliced
8 oz white or cremini mushrooms, sliced
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
2 cups beef broth (low-sodium preferred)
2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1/2 cup heavy cream
Instructions
- Spray or line the inside of the slow cooker. Place cube steaks in the bottom and season with Montreal steak seasoning.
- In a skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Sauté onions and mushrooms until lightly browned, about 5 minutes.
- Sprinkle flour and remaining seasoning over the onion-mushroom mixture. Cook for 1–2 minutes, stirring.
- Slowly add beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, deglazing the skillet and stirring until smooth to form the gravy base.
- Pour the mushroom-onion gravy over the steaks in the crock pot.
- Cover and cook on Low for 6–7 hours or on High for 3–4 hours until steaks are fork-tender.
- Remove steaks and stir heavy cream into the gravy until thickened. Return steaks to coat or serve with gravy on top.
Notes
For a spice alternative, replace Montreal seasoning with onion soup mix or a homemade blend of garlic, paprika, cumin, oregano, onion powder, and pepper.
Add potatoes, carrots, or celery during the final hour for a one-pot meal.
For extra heat, stir in a few dashes of hot sauce.
Serve with mashed potatoes, rice, egg noodles, or rolls for a complete meal.
