Ingredients
Chicken and Coating
- 4 chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces
- 1 cup cornstarch (plus 1 tablespoon for sauce)
- 3 large eggs, slightly beaten
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1/4 cup canola oil
Honey Sesame Sauce
- 3/4 cup honey
- 3/4 cup soy sauce
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup rice wine vinegar
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 1 teaspoon minced garlic
- Additional sesame seeds for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Chicken: Preheat the oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. Cut the chicken breasts into bite-sized pieces and season them with salt and pepper evenly to enhance flavor.
- Coat Chicken Pieces: Place cornstarch in one bowl and slightly beaten eggs in another. Dip each chicken piece first into the cornstarch, then into the egg mixture, and again into the cornstarch for a double coating. Alternatively, place chicken pieces and cornstarch in a large gallon-size bag and shake to coat thoroughly.
- Brown the Chicken: Heat canola oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Fry the coated chicken pieces, cooking until they turn golden brown on all sides. Once browned, transfer them to a greased 9×13 inch baking dish.
- Prepare Sauce and Bake: In a medium bowl, mix honey, soy sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, rice wine vinegar, sesame oil, minced garlic, and 1 tablespoon of cornstarch until well combined. Pour this sauce evenly over the browned chicken in the baking dish. Bake the chicken uncovered for 45 minutes or until cooked through, stirring every 15 minutes to ensure all pieces are well coated with the sauce.
- Garnish and Serve: After baking, sprinkle additional sesame seeds on top for garnish. Serve hot with your choice of sides such as steamed rice or vegetables.
Notes
- Shaking chicken in a bag with cornstarch is a quick and less messy way for coating.
- Stirring the chicken during baking helps evenly coat pieces in the sauce and prevents sticking.
- Adjust sweetness or saltiness by modifying honey or soy sauce amounts according to preference.
- For extra crispiness, briefly broil at the end of baking but watch closely to prevent burning.
- This dish pairs well with steamed vegetables or fried rice for a complete meal.
