Ingredients
Brie and Topping
- 1 (16-ounce) wheel of brie cheese
- ¼ cup roughly chopped pecans
- 2 tablespoons dark brown sugar
- ½ teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper
Puff Pastry
- 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed
- 1 large egg (for egg wash)
Serving
- Crackers, for serving (optional)
- Apple slices, for serving (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 400°F (200°C) and allow it to fully preheat to ensure even baking of the brie wrapped in pastry.
- Prepare the puff pastry: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the thawed puff pastry sheet to smooth any creases and create an even layer that will fully encase the brie.
- Mix the pecan topping: In a small bowl, combine roughly chopped pecans, dark brown sugar, and freshly cracked black pepper to create a sweet and savory topping that will add crunch and flavor.
- Assemble the brie: Place the wheel of brie in the center of the puff pastry. Sprinkle the pecan mixture evenly over the top of the brie, pressing slightly to adhere.
- Wrap the brie: Fold the puff pastry up and over the brie, pinching the edges to seal securely. Trim any excess pastry to create a neat package.
- Apply egg wash: Beat the large egg in a small bowl and brush it over the entire wrapped brie. This egg wash will give the pastry a beautiful golden color when baked.
- Bake: Place the wrapped brie on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and puffed.
- Cool and serve: Remove from oven and allow the baked brie to cool for 5-10 minutes before serving. This resting time helps the cheese set slightly for easier slicing.
- Serve: Serve warm with crackers and fresh apple slices for a perfect combination of creamy, crisp, and crunchy textures.
Notes
- For best results, thaw the puff pastry completely before assembling.
- You can substitute pecans with walnuts or almonds if preferred.
- Use a silicone baking mat or parchment paper to prevent sticking and ease clean-up.
- Let the baked brie cool slightly before cutting to prevent the cheese from oozing out too quickly.
- This appetizer is best served warm but can be reheated briefly if needed.
